The MIDEL1000 Interface
The RFID technology is presently an extremely important and useful technology implemented for a large amount of business domains and business processes. To cope with user requirements and upcoming potentials especially for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Softronica developed a new prototype solution within the European funded AMI-4-SME research project.
The innovative prototype solution realised in the scope of the AMI-4-SME project, combines an RFID based sensor system with mobile readers and middleware, highly compatible for integration with SME infrastructures. It is based on the requirements from manufacturing SMEs, as identified in the heterogeneous AMI-4-SME business cases from manufacturing industry.
Basic enabling technology for realisation of the AMI-4-SME RFID full prototype was the MIDEL1000 set. It is an interface which is used to integrate the RFID technology with a legacy system. This combination allows to forward process events to the legacy system (e.g. indicating a specific status of production and maintenance processes, like material delivery events), based on a web-service based interface. The overall objective is to realise an optimal interaction of human operators with their working environment and their ambience.
- Generating knowledge about events, status and conditions in business processes, as realised and tested in the AMI-4-SME business cases from manufacturing industry, not requiring explicit user interaction.
- Facilitating control of ambient variables, by the human operator himself or machines operating in manufacturing or maintenance processes.
- Intelligent control of material supplies within the manufacturing workflow and facilitating localisation of e.g. work pieces, tools or equipment.
- Gathering and communication of implicit knowledge from workers.
- Facilitating the scheduling, control and recording of manufacturing operations (e.g. time variables related to start, end or total time elapsed).
The Mobile Hand Held RFID Reader
The mobile hand held reader is designed to operate together with the MIDEL1000. It consists of a RFID short range reader including battery and a Bluetooth connection in order to communicate to the MIDEL1000. It enables an employee to read the data from an RFID TAG by means of the RFID reader and send it to the legacy system. This can be accomplished by simply positioning the mobile hand held reader close to the RFID Tag and pressing the mobile hand reader button.
